Val Oliver presents Teacher Development and In-Service Programs FREE of CHARGE to school districts within the Dallas/Fort Worth and north Texas area. (For other areas, please contact Val directly with contact information below.)
Physical Education - Elementary
Time: 1-3 hours
This P.E. In-Service consists of a short demonstration of the spinning skill arts of yo-yo, top spinning and diabolo, with a brief introduction about how these skills relate not only to science, but to these Physical Education Objectives.
Eye-Hand Coordination, Catching Skills, Bilateral Proficiency, Fine Motor Skill-Building, Sequencing and Visual Tracking. These skills are also ideal in teaching the benefits of practice.
The majority of the time is then used to teach the P.E. teachers not only how to use some of these skill toys themselves, but more importantly, how to teach a yo-yo unit, spin top unit, and if time permits, a diabolo unit.
These units can be taught to an entire class and become ideal activities for rain days or when setting up small stations of activities for students to visit.
Each teacher in attendance receives a FREE yo-yo, as well as a packet containing instructional booklets on all three skill toys: Yo-Yo, Spin Top and Diabolo.
Districts that have taken advantage of this offer are: Birdville, Grand Prairie, Grapevine, Fort Bendand others.
Science Department - Elementary
Time: 1-2 hours
Topic: Force & Motion
Concepts: Rotational Inertia, Friction, Gravity, Levers, Planes of Spin, Distribution of Mass, and Potential & Kinetic Energy.
This academic In-Service consists of a short demonstration of the spinning skill arts of yo-yo, top spinning and diabolo, with a brief introduction about how these itemscan teach the physics of spin to students in a fun and exciting way.
Val then demonstrates how, without being highly proficient with the yo-yo or spin top, you can still use these tools in the classroom to demonstrate and teach these science concepts. Other simple items such as footballs, gyroscopes and flying discs are also used in fun and interesting ways that any teacher can utilize once shown how.
This a a fun and enlightening presentation to bring science into the lives of students with items that relate to their world.
Each teacher in attendance receives a FREE yo-yo, as well as a packet of information including a full Science Curriculum that may be used in the classroom or for science project ideas.
NOTE for Middle and High School Science Requests: While all of these topics can be expounded on to the higher grade levels, the presentations offered here are not available at no charge unless elementary teachers are also in attendance.
* All Teacher Development and In-Service Presentations contain a short description of the FREE Science of Spin program available to elementary schools.
